
Back to school means packed lunches, snacks, and juice boxes. Fruit drinks are convenient and often look like a healthy choice, especially when the package says “with vitamin C.”
But have you ever turned the package around and read the ingredients?
As a mother of four children and a chemist and toxicologist, I have always encouraged my children to understand what is actually in the foods and drinks they consume.
One combination parents should know about is benzoate preservatives and vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid.
Why Are Benzoates Added to Drinks?
Sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate are preservatives added to some fruit drinks, soft drinks and other beverages to help prevent the growth of bacteria, yeasts and moulds.
Benzoic acid can also occur naturally in some fruits, including cranberries.
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, may be naturally present in a beverage because it contains fruit juice. Synthetic Ascorbic acid can also be added during manufacturing, including to restore vitamin C lost during processing or storage, to increase the vitamin C content, or for its antioxidant function. Commercially added ascorbic acid is typically manufactured rather than extracted directly from fruit.
Individually, their presence does not mean that a beverage contains benzene.
The concern is what can happen when benzoates and vitamin C are present together under certain conditions.
When Vitamin C + Benzoates Can Form Benzene
Health Canada and the U.S. FDA have investigated the formation of benzene in beverages.
Benzoate salts can react with ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, to form small amounts of benzene. Exposure to heat and light can promote this reaction. Other factors, including the beverage formulation, also influence whether benzene forms.
Why does this matter?
Benzene is a known human carcinogen. It is important to make the distinction:
Benzoic acid and sodium benzoate are not benzene.
Having sodium benzoate and vitamin C on an ingredient list also does not mean that a drink contains a harmful amount of benzene.
Rather, the concern is that benzene can form from this combination under certain conditions, such as heat and light.
So What Should Parents Do?
This information is not meant to make parents afraid of an occasional juice box.
It is about awareness and making informed everyday choices.
Read the ingredient list. If you see ingredients such as sodium benzoate, potassium benzoate, and ascorbic acid, understand why they are there and why beverage formulation and storage matter.
Also remember that a package advertising “with vitamin C” does not necessarily mean that all of that vitamin C came naturally from the fruit. Synthetic Ascorbic acid may have been added during manufacturing.
Children do not need a packaged fruit drink every day simply because it contains added vitamin C.
Water First, Whole Fruit Often
For everyday hydration, I prefer to keep things simple:
- Make water the main drink
- Offer whole fresh fruit rather than relying on fruit drinks for nutrition
- Flavour water naturally with fresh fruit
- Add freshly squeezed lemon, lime or orange
- Add strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or cucumber
- Use fresh mint for additional flavour
- Enjoy juice in moderation rather than making it the main source of hydration
Whole fruit also provides something a filtered juice or fruit drink may not: fibre and the natural structure of the whole food.
What I Taught My Four Children
My four children did not always appreciate these choices when they were young.
Sometimes they wanted the juice boxes, colourful drinks and other packaged products their friends had. And yes, they fussed!
But I remained consistent and explained why I wanted water, fresh fruits and less processed foods to be their everyday choices.
As parents, we cannot control every food or drink our children consume. But we can give them something that lasts much longer than a packed lunch: Teach them to turn the package around. Teach them to read the ingredients. Teach them to ask questions.
This back-to-school season, keep hydration simple. Water first. Fresh fruit often. Freshly squeezed flavour. And read the label before putting that juice box into the lunchbox.
